The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards

This book begins on a winter's night in 1964, when twins are delivered by their father, Dr. David Henry. The first, a boy, is healthy, but the second, a daughter, has Down's syndrome. Fearful that this second child will destroy his wife and his family, he asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby to an institution. Instead, Caroline leaves the city and takes the baby with her.
I've started this book, and so far it is a real page turner!
